“Your assignment may change with the season, but your identity in God should remain your anchor.”
— Nadira Lewis
One of the most important things we have to learn in our walk with God is the difference between who we are and what we are called to do.
Your assignment can change.
Your role can change.
Your environment can change.
Your title can change.
Your responsibilities can change.
Your visibility can change.
Your season can change.
But your identity in God was never supposed to change every time your circumstances do.
There are seasons when God may call you to build.
There are seasons when He may call you to rest.
There are seasons when you are highly visible, producing, creating, serving, leading, teaching, and pouring into others.
Then there may be seasons when God pulls you back, slows you down, hides you, heals you, develops you, or redirects you.
And if you have connected your identity to your assignment, those transitions can feel like an identity crisis.
You may begin asking:
“Who am I if I’m not doing what I used to do?”
“Who am I without this title?”
“Who am I if this opportunity ends?”
“Who am I if God changes my direction?”
“Who am I when people no longer recognize me for the thing I was known for?”
This is why your assignment cannot become the foundation of your identity.
Your assignment is something God gives you to steward.
Your identity is something God established before the assignment ever arrived.
Before you were an entrepreneur, you belonged to God.
Before you became a mother, leader, coach, author, minister, creator, or business owner, you were His.
Before the platform.
Before the title.
Before the followers.
Before the accomplishments.
Before anyone recognized your gift.
God already knew you.
Ephesians 1:4 reminds us that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.
That means your identity was never supposed to be built around the temporary things you accomplish in a particular season.
The danger comes when we allow our purpose, gift, business, ministry, relationships, or responsibilities to carry the weight of telling us who we are.
Then when something changes, we feel like we changed.
When the business slows down, we question our value.
When the ministry season shifts, we question our calling.
When a relationship ends, we question our worth.
When a door closes, we question whether God still has purpose for us.
But a closed door does not erase your identity.
A changed assignment does not cancel your calling.
A hidden season does not decrease your value.
And a season of waiting does not mean God has forgotten who you are.
Sometimes God changes the assignment because He is changing the strategy.
Sometimes He changes the environment because He is preparing you for something different.
Sometimes He removes you from one place because that season has completed its purpose.
And sometimes the very thing you are fighting to hold onto is something God is asking you to release so you can follow Him into what is next.
That is why identity must become your anchor.
An anchor keeps you steady when everything around you is moving.
When your identity is anchored in Christ, you can transition without losing yourself.
You can leave a role without losing your worth.
You can release a title without losing your confidence.
You can enter a new season without needing everyone to understand it.
You can start again without believing you are starting from nothing.
Because you know:
I am still chosen.
I am still loved.
I am still His.
I am still valuable.
I still carry purpose.
I am still becoming who God created me to be.
Colossians 3:3 says, “For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.” (NLT)
That is security.
Your real life is not hidden in your platform.
It is not hidden in your career.
It is not hidden in your relationship status.
It is not hidden in your accomplishments.
It is hidden with Christ in God.
And when that truth becomes settled in you, seasons stop having the power to define you.
You can appreciate an assignment without worshiping it.
You can steward a gift without turning it into your identity.
You can celebrate success without believing success determines your worth.
And you can survive transition without believing you have lost yourself.
Some of us are not afraid of the next season.
We are afraid of who we will be without the old one.
But God may be reminding you:
You were never the assignment.
You are His daughter.
You are His workmanship.
You are His beloved.
You are someone He created intentionally and called purposefully.
Assignments are seasonal.
Identity is foundational.
So when the season changes, ask yourself:
Am I grieving because God changed my assignment, or because I allowed the assignment to become my identity?
Am I afraid to release this season because I no longer know who I am without it?
Have I become more attached to what God gave me to do than to the God who gave it to me?
Those questions can reveal where your anchor has really been.
The goal is not to avoid change.
The goal is to become so secure in God that change does not uproot you.
Let the assignment change.
Let the strategy change.
Let the platform change.
Let the season change.
Let God redirect you when necessary.
But keep your identity anchored in Him.
Because when you know who you are in God, you can walk confidently into whatever season He calls you next.
Your assignment may change with the season, but your identity in God should remain your anchor.
